Clean Community Award

ECC has been recognized as an Indiana Clean Community by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. The state recognizes the city for being proactive to become a cleaner, greener, more sustainable city. We have a long way to go, but it is nice to be recognized for the efforts so far. Evansville is a Bronze level Clean Community, and ECC will continue to strive for advanced achievements in the program.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management recognized Evansville as a Clean Community in April of 2024. The Clean Community Program is a free and voluntary program aimed at recognizing and rewarding Indiana communities for implementing a proactive, positive approach to addressing community and social issues through sustainable environmental and wellness projects.

Evansville is the ninth municipality in the state and the largest awardee by population to earn a Clean Community designation. Evansville’s participation in this program signals its proactive approach and commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action to ensure a clean, healthy, prosperous community for all.

Evansville is qualified as a Bronze level Clean Community, which means it has a clean environmental history with IDEM and commitment from the Mayor to participate in the program. ECC plans to pursue advanced levels of designation, each requiring completion of a number of IDEM approved projects contributing to environmental stewardship, climate action, and environmental justice. Evansville has been completing and pursuing a variety of projects to qualify for advanced levels, including SolSmart designation, StormReady Certification, local burn ordinance adoption, Climate Action Plan adoption, brownfield mitigation, offering tox-away events, maintaining TreeCity USA status, and others.
