6.8% of our local GHG emissions stems from waste production, but the environmental and health issues caused by waste are far more impactful than it's GHG emissions. Excessive waste places our bodies and ecosystems under distress. It contributes to water and air pollution leading to an increase in respiratory illnesses, cancer, and genetic damage. It causes decreases in biodiversity and wildlife by inflicting harm onto other species through entanglement and ingestion.

By pushing Evansville towards zero waste, we can create a circular economy. In 2002 San Francisco set a goal to divert 75% of their waste by 2010. Within 2 years, they were able to reduce it by 80%. A huge part of their cities success was the adoption of a Construction and Demolition Debris Recovery Ordinance and Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance.

Many other cities in the Midwest are leading this charge. Earlier this year, our team got an inside look into St. Louis' Energizer soccer stadium. This facility has managed to build out zero waste infrastructure by doing in house recycling and composting. They require fans to purchase and use reusable cups as well as only serving food in compostable dishes.

Zero Waste Evansville is a community organization dedicated to reducing waste in the Evansville region. We encourage everyone to join their Facebook group so that you can interact with others dedicated to creating a circular economy in our City.
